Ann Marie Goes Green

Ann Marie is a lifelong champion of preserving the environment.  From early years scouring woods for artifacts, and removing human presence, to teaching toddlers to recycle, she brings information to the fore which would otherwise be obscured in the interest of profit.

Look for features on water (fresh and salt), air, trees and manufacturing.  Check out connections to other environmentally-minded Zones.

Fresh and Green

on Oct 28, 11 at 03:21 PM

You may not be a vegetarian. Goodness knows, I like a rare steak as much as the next American, but that does not mean I am not a green cook.

Groan...Organic? Really?

Which one of these applies to you?

  • Cannot afford $5 for three apples
  • Has a black thumb
  • Prefers pork
  • Thinks vegetables are for sissies

The organic label in your supermarket is one way to cook green, but it is not the only way. Eating green is better for your health than processed foods and preservatives. Contrary to the press release, preservatives in your food do not make YOU last longer!

The Price Tag

Fresh is best, but it is not the only way. If you simply cannot afford the organic label, try some other ways to get some green foods into your diet.

Thanks, Raven! San, my children have been harvesting cans from their friends. Teens end up with cans and bottles in their cars. The teens pull them out whenever a car comes by the house so they are not thrown away!

Great zone-- I'm adding this to my "plants" zone bundle, since I think a lot of gardeners care about helping the environment. I liked the "nurdles" article, since it taught me something new.

Wonderful zone, at home we have two separate boxes for recycling. Plastic goes in one and paper, cardboard etc in the other. Have a hole in the garden where all the fruit, dead leaves, veg peels etc are deposited. This becomes compost to reuse for plants. So much one family can do to start making a difference..a zone I will definitely revisit :)

Liv, I love it! I have seen those. My mother med-missions in Nicaragua at a coffee plantation and they make those, too. You would be amazed at some of the poisons released in burning!

Ann Marie, love this site. I am vacationing in Fl and Just bought small colorful change purses, handmade out of trash bags by the women of COFEACOMA- a co-op of organic coffee growers in the mountains of Honduras. By purchasing them, it benifits communities there that are teaching alternatives to burning trash.Providing income for the artists & families.-- Honduras no less ! LOL

Me too on the old toothbrushes for cleaning. I use the cardboard egg crates for lighting the grill. It cuts down, or eliminates the need for lighter fluid. Just put a briquette in each egg spot and light the carton. Newspapers make excellent window cleaning 'cloths' instead of using paper towels.
